The Jameh Mosque of Isfahan is one of the most prominent examples of Islamic architecture in Iran, featuring a wide range of decorative elements from various historical periods, particularly the Seljuk and Ilkhanid eras. Among the significant ornamental techniques used in this mosque is Brick Ended Plug (plaster relief with recessed brick background), which is especially visible in the wall panels of the Shagerd Iwan. Despite the long history and technical-aesthetic value of this method, the visual structure of these plasterworks has received little focused attention in scholarly sources. The need to examine and document the visual components of these elements, and to uncover the underlying visual patterns, has provided the basis for this study. This research aims to investigate the visual elements present in two plaster wall panels created in the Brick Ended plug technique, located in the arched corridor of the southeastern section of the Shagerd Iwan of the Jameh Mosque. The main research question is: What visual elements are used in these motifs and inscriptions, and how do they affect composition, harmony, rhythm, and visual balance? The research method is descriptive–analytical. Data have been collected through library and archival studies as well as field observations, including direct viewing, photography, and line drawing of the motifs. The analysis is based on fundamental principles of visual arts—such as point, line, shape, texture, space, and composition—and each element has been examined through selected case samples from the panels. The findings indicate that in the examined panels, a variety of line types and directions (vertical, diagonal, curved, and straight), proportional forms, and repeated motifs have resulted in a structured and harmonious visual organization. The use of negative space alongside geometric forms and Kufic inscriptions contributes to a greater sense of visual cohesion. The contrast between the soft plaster texture and the surrounding brickwork enhances the relief of the motifs, while natural light plays a role in emphasizing their visual depth. The analysis shows that these plasterworks, both technically and visually, exhibit significant structural and compositional complexity, achieved through precise proportionality and rhythmic repetition.
