The present article explores decorative motifs resembling the form of "Yin and Yang" in the pottery art of Islamic Iran. Yin and Yang is a circular form composed of two parts that represent the opposing yet complementary forces of existence. The main premise of this study is that, throughout Islamic periods in Iran, various artists — including potters — created a wide range of similar motifs inspired by the Yin and Yang form, which simultaneously reflected a distinctive identity aligned with the philosophy of Islamic art.
Specifically, certain Islamic-era pottery pieces exhibit motifs that share similarities with the Chinese Yin and Yang form. These commonalities, which may help trace the origin of some Islamic pottery decorations, form the basis for this research. It seeks to answer the following question:What factors influenced the use of Yin and Yang-like decorative motifs in Islamic Iranian pottery, and into how many categories can these motifs be classified in terms of execution? To address this question, the study employs a descriptive-comparative method with an analytical approach, and relies on both library and digital resources for data collection. Among the available pottery works, ten selected pieces — distinguished by their strong visual resemblance to the Yin and Yang form and spanning a historical range from the early Islamic period to the end of the Qajar era — have been examined and analyzed.The findings indicate that numerous Yin and Yang-inspired motifs can be identified in Islamic Iranian pottery. These motifs bear significant visual similarity to the original form but exhibit notable differences in design details and conceptual nature due to the influence of Islamic art philosophy. For instance, some of these motifs are executed using arabesque, floral, or animal-based designs. In other words, Muslim potters, inspired by the form and meaning of Yin and Yang, combined it with Islamic thought to create unique and innovative decorative motifs.
