The Comparative Study of the Constructional Features of Gliding Decorations of Qajar Period in Isfahan/ Case study: the Houses of Qodsiyyeh, Shahshahan and Haghighi

Abstract

Gilding is among the valuable and precious decorations in Qajar era which blandish beside the other decorations in castles and governmental mansions and also in some aristocrats houses and men of ranks from that period. Since this precious and worthy adornment has been used by the various and multifarious methods and techniques in this periods such as using the gold sheets, using of gold in the shape of powder mixed with ribbing scattering of gold decorations and …therefore the aim of accomplishing this paper is that the typology of the gilt ornaments in the era of Qajar has been explored and evaluated. For this reason by recognizing and comparing of gilding decorations in different mansions in Qajar dynasty in Isfahan in three ancient houses (Haghighi’s house-Shahshahan’s house- Ghodsie’s house) and performing the technological inspections on these precious kinds of decorations, the extensive studies has been accomplished with the aim of reaching to the knowledge of the circumstances of methods and manners of performing the gold sticking decorations and the way of their layering in the era of Qajar and after sampling in direction of attaining to the comprehensive information, various classic and systematic chemical experimentations (SEM- EDX,XRD,FTIR…) for determining the kind of componential constructions of materials and the methodology of layer arranging has been used. Hence, in this investigation, it has been tried to find answers for all these questions such as how is the methods of performing the gilding decorations in Qajar periods. Or if it was in company with the previous periods or it is different from them. Or whether these gilding decorations are the same as in the houses of Qajar and worked similarly on the said buildings or performed differently and generally how many of methods has been used in accomplishing the gilding ornaments of houses in Qajar periods and can we represent one general method of decoration to carrying out the gilding decorations in the buildings of Qajar era in Isfahan. At the end by analyzing the results of data and inspecting the gained outcomes of doing various systematical and chemical experiments, it has been observed that in gilding decorations of the Qajar houses, different kinds of materials and methods has been used and. Also these differences were evident in using of various compounds in the type of golden sheets which has been used in gilding ornaments and layer arranging of one wall of the same house.
